Friday Happenings

Music at Eden's Edge performed for us on Friday. There was a bassoon player, a violin player, a cello and a viola. The musicians talked to us about melody and mood in music. It was a treat to have professional musicians in our school. They are inspiring!

In the afternoon we had our Valentine's party...it was a festival of sugar, Valentine cards and fun. Thanks to all the folks who contributed goodies. We had a great time!

Have a wonderful, relaxing vacation!

On Thursday, we went to Star Lab where they showed us the different constellations of stars. It was set up in the gym and at first we had to lift up the flaps and bend over to walk in through a tunnel. When we got in there, it was pitch black so our eyes had to adjust to the darkness. We saw what the sky would look like the next few nights. We learned that some stars are different colors and that you can't really see all the planets. The North star is used to help navigate because it stays in the same place and you'll know that that's always north. Air was blown into the Star Lab. The Star Lab was really cool!

Today, Firefighter Keith came into our class. We learned about fire safety. He reviewed safety tips we learned other years. He told us about escape plans. We should have an escape plan for our family in case there's a fire. Then we'd know where to go. He told us that if there is smoke in our house, to crawl low. If we're ever in a house that's burning and trapped in a room, throw stuff out the window to get attention. He also reminded us to check our smoke alarms. It's helpful to have a fire safety class each year.

Today we talked about the water cycle in science. To observe what happens to water in the water cycle, we created mini-water cycles in baggies and will check them over the next week or two. Each science group filled a small cup with colored water and put it into a baggie so that it rested in one corner. The baggies were then sealed up and taped to a window. We're all curious about what changes are in store! Stay tuned...

Another Density Experiment, 2/2/2010

Today was a fantastic day. We did an experiment with salt water and fresh water. Each science group had to figure out some way to prove that salt water is more dense. We put fresh water in one container and salt water in the other one. We had to make sure that we put the same amount of water in each container because if we didn't it wouldn't be accurate. The one with more water would probably look more dense because the hydrometer would go higher. We put the hydrometers in each container. We saw which one went higher and the one that went higher is the one that's more dense. That was the salt water! Science is a really good, fun activity.

Monday, February 1st

Today we had a wicked fun day. We had an awesome science class and a very fun math class.

In math, we learned about "fraction of" problems. We learned a way to figure out what a fraction of a whole number is. We divided the whole number by the denominator. Some of us used counters to figure it out.

In science, we figured out which has more density - hot water or cold water. The most dense is cold water. Our evidence is that we got two cups and we put hot water in one and cold water in the other. Then we put two drops of food coloring in each cup at the same time. Next we saw which one expanded faster and the one that expanded faster was the one with less density. That was hot water. The food coloring acted really slow in the cold water. The other activity was with hydrometers (like the kind used in aquariums). We took cold and hot water and put a hydrometer in each one. We wanted to know which one would go higher. The one that went higher was the hydrometer in cold water. So now we know that cold water is more dense than hot water.
